Students learn to keep a steady beat in a fun-filled jump rope activity/contest. This lesson is designed to fulfill Standard #2 of the National Standards for Music: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

'The Wee Little Scare' Music Lesson Plan

Step 1
Tell students, "I have a story to share with you today. It's called The Wee Little Scare". Read story.

Step 2
Tell students, "We're going to have a jump rope contest in music class today, and the winner will receive a prize. Before we get to that, we have a few things to learn."

Step 3
Tell students, "The story I just read is also a song. I'll teach it to you phrase by phrase, and then we'll sing it together." Teach song phrase by phrase until students have mastery.

Step 4
Tell students, "Let's put an instrumental part with our song. I'll pass out the xylophones, metallophones and temple blocks and we'll get started". Teach Orff arrangement, providing every student with a hands-on music making opportunity.

Step 5
Tell students, "Let's put it all together." Sing song with Orff arrangement.

Step 6
Tell students, "The most important thing that I want you to gain from this lesson is being better at keeping a steady beat. Our jump rope contest will give you an opportunity to practice this skill. Let's get started." Practice spinning the rope and jumping, while singing and playing the Orff arrangement. Extended the counting in the book to the number of jumps that each student completes.

Step 7
Tell students, "Let's start the contest. Each student will have one chance to jump. The student with the most jumps wins the prize."
