Ludwig van Beethoven | Hey Kids, Meet the Composer Biography

Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770, to Johann van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Keverich. Although Beethoven's exact birth date is not known, his family celebrated it on December 16th. Beethoven's first music instruction came from his father Johann who was said to have been a harsh instructor. Johann later asked his friend, Tobias Pfeiffer, to teach young Beethoven. Although it seems that the harsh treatment continued as Johann and his friend would come home late on occasion to pull young Ludwig from his bed to practice until morning. Read more....

Ludwig van Beethoven Writing Assignment

Write a few paragraphs on Ludwig van Beethoven that includes facts about his life and music. Then ask your child to complete the project by watching and describing a recorded performance of Beethoven's Symphony No.5 - First Movement. Ask them to begin with a list of adjectives and then follow with paragraph form. The following questions will help to guide their critique.

1) How many notes compose the opening motive? (Beethoven's music is motivic, where as Mozart's music is melodic. Motives are short melodic ideas that are 3 to 7 notes long. Beethoven's Symphony No.5 - First Movement begins with two statements of a four note motive.)

2) Is Beethoven's Symphony No.5 - First Movement best described as light and joyful or strong and dark? (This work is best described as strong and dark?)
