Step 1
Tell students, "Today we're going to master the notes of the treble clef. We'll start by practicing on the whiteboard, and then you'll team up with a partner for a 'Name That Tune' contest!"

Step 2
Draw a treble clef staff on the whiteboard. Write the notes C-D-E-F-G-A one by one. Ask students to identify if each note is a line note or a space note. Leave these notes on the board to help students as they work through their worksheets.

Step 3
Explain the rules for the contest.

1) Students will work in pairs to complete the worksheet.
2) Students should begin by identifying each note of the five melodic fragments, writing the name of each note on the line below the note.
3) After identifying each note of the five melodic fragments, the student pairs are to bring their worksheet to the teacher to be checked for accuracy.
4) Student pairs correctly naming each note on the worksheet, may take an Orff xylophone/metallophone to their space in the classroom and begin to identify the names of the songs. Each song title is given at the bottom of the worksheet along with several additional popular children's songs.
5) The first three groups to correctly complete the worksheet will take first, second, and third place. Prizes or candy may be awarded.

Step 4
Allow students to choose a partner and find a space in the classroom to work together.

Step 5
Have one student from each pair collect a worksheet and pencil. Tip: Placing these in a few different spots around the room helps avoid a "traffic jam" and keeps kids on task.

Step 6
As teams finish, they can return to their space and practice playing one of the melodies. Some students might even want to figure out how to play the entire song!

Step 7
Announce and congratulate your first, second, and third-place winners.
