History for 'Round and Round the Garden'

Round and Round the Garden is a Mother Goose nursery rhyme. It is not known exactly how old the rhyme is though it can be placed after the introduction of the Teddy Bear by the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. in America and by the the Steiff company in Germany in the early 1900's. The teddy bear is named after former President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was "Teddy".

Round and round the garden
Like a teddy bear
(Draw circle on child's hand)

One step, two steps,
(Walk fingers up child's arm)

Tickle you under there!
