Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a composer, pianist, organist, and conductor during the early Romantic period. He was born in 1809 in Hamburg, Germany, the second of four children. His older sister Fanny also displayed exceptional musical talent. He began taking piano lessons from his mother at age six and gave his first public performance at age 9. He wrote his String Octet in E-flat Major at age 16, and showed with this work an indication of the full power of his brilliance. Mendelssohn is most remembered for his Overture to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and the incidental music that followed, which included his Wedding March.
