W. C. Handy was born in Florence, Alabama. His father was a minister. He wanted his son to follow in his footsteps, but young W. C. Handy loved music. In the 1920s and 1930s, when blues music was popular, Handy's music made him an international superstar. He is best remembered for Beale Street Blues, Yellow Dog Rag, and St. Louis Blues.
