Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was born in Zwickau, in the Kingdom of Saxony. He was the last of five children of August and Johanna Schumann. He began composing music before the age of seven, though as a boy he spent as much time with music as he did with books. An accident to a finger on his right hand put an end to his hopes for being a virtuoso performer. His misfortune turned his full focus to composing. This turn marked the beginning to a rich and rewarding musical career. Schumann is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic Era.
