The Bassoon is the largest and lowest sounding member of the woodwind family except, of course, when the contrabassoon is asked to play. This much bigger bassoon can play a whole octave lower. The sound of the bassoon is sometimes expressive like an oboe, sometimes funny, and sometimes gruff. It all depends on the music it is asked to play.
