EIGHTH NOTE - A note an eighth the length of a whole note. For example, in 4/4 meter an eighth note receives one half beat of sound.

EIGHTH REST - A rest an eighth the length of a whole rest. For example, in 4/4 meter an eighth note receives one half beat of silence.

DUKE ELLINGTON - (1899-1974) An American jazz composer and pianist. Ellington excelled as a composer/arranger, bringing the world a sound that was uniquely his.

ENCORE - The performance of a repeated piece or additional piece at the end of a concert.

ENGLISH HORN - A double reed instrument from the woodwind family. The English Horn is similar to the oboe though larger, with a tone that is lower and darker in mood.

ENHARMONIC - A term used to describe notes that sound the same but are spelled different. For example, A# and Bb; or F# and Gb.

ENSEMBLE - A group of instrumental performers or singers.

ESPRESSIVO - Expressively.

ETUDE - French for "study." A piece of music intended to help students practice an instrument.
