Alexander Borodin was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1833. As a child, he received a quality education, including piano lessons. He eventually earned a doctorate in medicine at the Medico-Surgical Academy. Borodin was not as prolific a composer as were many of the composers of his day. He even described himself as a Sunday composer. However, he was a member of The Five, which was an elite group of Russian composers dedicated to writing music in a nationalistic Russian style. He is best known for his symphonies and his opera, Prince Igor.
