Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Felix Mendelssohn
for Intermediate/Level 3 Piano Solo from the Free Sheet Music Index
Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, Germany on February 3, 1809. He was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor during the early Romantic period. Two of his most notable contributions include the revival of interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and for his composition of his cantata Festgesang, from which the melody for Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is derived. Interestingly enough Mendelssohn extracted this piece from a secular composition for use in his cantata, though felt it unsuitable for sacred music. Charles Wesley found it suitable, however, and adapted this tune. First appearing in 1739, it has become one of the most celebrated Christmastime hymns ever written.
