Silent Night
from the MMF! Songbook

History
Silent Night (Stille Nacht) was first performed in Nicola-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in Oberndorf, Austria. Father Josef Mohr had written the words to this carol 1816, and for the Christmas service of 1818, Father Mohr asked headmaster Franz Gruber to compose a melody to his text and perform it on the guitar. From that humble beginning, Silent Night has become one of the most popular carols of all time, and has been translated into over 300 languages and dialects thoughout the world.

Fun Facts
In 1914, during the Christmas truce, the words of Silent Night resounded throughout the battlefield, as English and German soldiers sang together.

Lyrics
Silent night, Holy night,
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon virgin Mother and Child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from Heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah,
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born.
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
