from the MMF! Songbook

History
O Christmas Tree, or O Tannenbaum, in its original German version, refers to a fir tree. The carol's best known text was penned by a German organist and teacher, Ernst Anschutz in 1824, and was set to an old folk tune.

Fun Facts
An instrumental version of O Tannenbaum was recorded by Vince Guaraldi for the Peanuts television special A Charlie Brown Christmas. The Peanuts special first aired in 1965, and continues to be a Christmastime favorite.

Lyrics
O Christmas Tree O, Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us.
They're green when summer days are bright;
They're green when winter snow is white.
O, Christmas Tree, O, Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
You give us so much pleasure!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
You give us so much pleasure!
How oft at Christmas tide the sight,
O green fir tree, gives us delight!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
You give us so much pleasure!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us.
They're green when summer days are bright;
They're green when winter snow is white.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
Your branches green delight us!
