XYLOPHONE - A member of the percussion family. Unlike most percussion instruments, it produces a pitch when struck. To make a sound on the xylophone the player must strike a bar with a mallet. (Orff xylophone shown.)

YODELING - A type of singing which involves repeated changes in pitch during a single note. Alpine yodeling has been a longtime tradition in Europe, which became popular in the 1830s as a form of entertainment in theaters and music halls.

ZITHER - A string instrument with strings stretched across a resonator box. It is played by strumming with fingers or a plectrum.
